Holiday Food & Toy Distribution

The annual Holiday Food and Toy Distribution is in its 36th year of community outreach in 2017. The purpose of the Holiday Food and Toy Distribution is to provide needy families in Monongalia County with food and toys for the holiday season.  In 2016, the distribution served more than 550 families, comprising 1,900 individuals. Many families throughout Monongalia County would be deprived of the joys that most associate with the holidays without the efforts of everyone involved.

This event is a true community collaboration.  Local radio station WCLG coordinates the food collection efforts each year.  Monongalia County Schools collect food through donations by children at area schools and the Postal Workers Association contributes food through their fall food drive held annually in November.  The Fourth Degree Assembly 1193 Knights of Columbus provide 5 lbs. bags of potatoes for each family.  Christian Help coordinates the collection, sorting, and distribution of toys to nearly 1,000 children and the Humane Society provides pet food and toys to more than 1,000 family pets.  The Connecting Link, Head Start, Early Head Start, and In Touch and Concerned are responsible for taking applications and the United Way coordinates overall event logistics and the volunteers for the distribution.  Each of these organizations, individual volunteers, and groups make this distribution a huge success!

To Apply for Assistance:

Applications will be accepted at The Connecting Link Monday through Friday, beginning Monday, October 2nd through Friday, November 17th from 9:00 am to noon and 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm.  Their office is located in the Monongahela Building (235 High Street) in Room 208.

To Volunteer:

On December 11th, 12th, and 13th, volunteers are needed to sort and bag donated food and organize toys in preparation for the distribution. It is on these days that a large portion of the effort behind the distribution takes place.  Volunteers will be on hand to show you how you can assist in the effort.  Any group or individual interested in helping should join us on these days.  The distribution of food and toys to families will take place on December 14th. Volunteers are also needed on this day to assist with the distribution.
