What is food insecurity?
Food insecurity is defined as the state of, or risk of, being unable to provide enough food to fully meet basic needs for all members of your family.
Currently, approx. 1-in-8 WV residents and nearly 1 in 4 children live in families that lack the means to regularly put enough nutritious food on the table for everyone to live healthy, active lives and are considered “food-insecure.” As a result, they struggle with hunger at some time during the year.
Where do food insecure families turn to for help?
Food pantries and soup kitchens provide food assistance in emergency situations and often become the most immediately accessible resource for families struggling to put food on the table.
How can you help?
Donate food or money to local food drives. All donations remain in the local area and every donation (no matter how big or small) received makes a difference to all individuals served.
Non-perishable donations requested:
- Canned vegetables, fruits, peanut butter, pasta, canned tuna etc. (Please check expiration dates)
- Cleaning supplies
- Personal care items
Every dollar donated can provide a meal to one food insecure person. Last year Monongalia County provided over 12,000 meals through local monetary donations alone.
Where your donations go?
The United Way Family Resource Network coordinates donations for the Food and Hunger Committee to Monongalia County through local food pantries and/or programs serving food insecure individuals. Monetary Donations are accepted as cash and checks made out to Monongalia County Food Pantries.
