Cans for the Community – Live with WVAQ, WAJR & WKKW

Join us on Friday, November 7, 2025, at Giant Eagle (University Town Center) for Cans for the Community, a live food drive event with WVAQ, WAJR, and WKKW Radio. We’re collecting non-perishable food items to support local families in need—your help makes a big impact!

Donation Hours: 6:00 AM – 6:00 PM

What to Donate

Please bring shelf-stable, unopened, non-expired items in good condition. Donations can be dropped off at our U-haul outside UTC Giant Eagle during the event.



Most-needed items include:

  • Peanut butter

  • Jam

  • Canned vegetables

  • Canned fruit and applesauce

  • Granola bars

  • Canned meats (tuna, chicken, etc.)

  • Pasta sauces (in cans or plastic jars only — no glass)

  • Dry pasta

  • Baking mixes

  • Instant potatoes

  • Canned beans

  • Rice

  • Dry herbs and spices

  • Soup

  • Cereal

  • Shelf-stable or powdered milk

  • Manual can openers

Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers are needed throughout the day to assist with collecting and sorting donations.

Volunteer Roles Include:

  • Greeting donors

  • Unloading food from vehicles

  • Sorting and placing items into the U-Haul

  • Thanking donors for their contributions

Shifts Available (2 volunteers minimum per shift):

  • 6:00 AM – 8:00 AM

  • 8:00 AM – 10:00 AM

  • 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM

  • 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM

  • 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM

  • 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM

What to Expect:

  • Light to moderate lifting

  • Standing for extended periods

  • Outdoor setting – dress for the weather

  • Water and snacks provided

  • Optional: bring a camping chair for breaks
